deep88 is back! here is a 7 track lp, music without any pretence, no silly fx or crazy compression/production tricks to take away from the music. just that 1988/1993 vibe with a slight balearic twist but some how avoiding to sound like a poor copy or dated. this last statement couldnt be any truer on this release. the vibe is carried through the whole ep with each consequent track then offering something a little bit different, some showing his balearic side and other tracks having a more house feel.

following strong turns from kasra v last year, this love fever spin-off label returns to call upon al kassian to drop some electro-pop enchantment on unsuspecting ears. with just one recently released record to his name, al has positively encouraged the intrigue that emanates from artificial emotion. -roboluv- is a sublime slice of house balladry shot through with a curious line in wobbly electro synths, which then really come to the fore on slower b1 jam -default-. with the heavily vocodered vocals pealing out through the mix, it s quite an arresting end result that culminates with the wonderful curio -broken embraces-.

sydney based swede adam stromstedt returns for the second release on lyssna, which he co-runs with partners out of stockholm and amsterdam. he s previously done stuff on bristol s banoffee pies and local imprint junk yard connections, mr. tophat s label. his offering on the a side entitled -sinbad- is a dusty and hypnotic deep house jam, that will appeal to fans of thomas melchior or more recently rene audiard. on the flip, there s label co-owner flord king, who just so happens to be the aforementioned connection in amsterdam. his contribution -dapper- is another excursion in subtle trance induction with rolling bass, immaculately programmed rhythm and woozy pads for added effect.

few would challenge the claim that the 1960s and 70s have been the most fertile two decades in the history of popular music ever - a period which, regardless of genre, laid the foundations for everything that has followed. what is more, this period was so fertile that the speed with which tastes changed left a colossal amount of incredible music to gather dust - perhaps most famously a profusion of funk, soul and jazz. it was a musical legacy that lay mouldering until the rise of sampling in late 80s hip-hop precipitated a mad scramble for lost crates and suddenly, the music that became known as rare groove - for obvious reasons (it was rare and very groovy) - experienced a phoenix-like rebirth. a quarter of a century on and a million funk, soul, jazz-funk and rare groove compilations, re-presses and re-releases later, you d think that cupboard was bare and yet, even now, there are gems to be found. pt is re-releasing the rarest of cuts that often were originally only limited runs or private pressings and new compilation down & wired is just such a collection. always soulful, this features everything from mod groovers and northern stompers, to funky bumps and latin heaters. yet while the quality of all cuts is immediately apparent, only one of the eleven has ever been previously been compiled because when pt do rare, they don t mess around. in fact, if these tracks were steaks - they d still be walking around eating grass.

australian label nightime drama, run by peter fincher (aka vibrio) and shaun franklin (aka trebek) now serves up its second standout release of 2016. this four track affair comes hot on the heels of the last by yoshihiro arikawa, and is a second release on the label by aussie live act, dj and producer trinity, with steven tang and italian based andee on the remix. trinity has also released on ooc, coincidence and android muziq and regularly performs all round europe. his sound deep and cosmic, heady and hypnotic, as the fresh tracks here prove. cascade drive is seven minutes of direct and elastic house with spacey pads and driving drums carrying you through the cosmos. from the earthmothern label and one half of rk s, andee strips it back to a slick rubber kick drum then layers in a forceful acid line and icy hi hats to really get you under its spell. the longform groove is physical and cerebral in equal measure. the next original is expansion, and again finds trinity serving up a hi tech and soul infused deep techno sound that is lithe and liquid, smeared with great pads and truly timeless. emphasis boss steven tang is the perfect man to remix given his style, and his version flips the cut into a more heavyweight and banging techno effort, but one that is just as littered with sci fi sounds, spaceship trails and intergalactic energies.

rivulet records are continuing their release just where the compilation at the beginning of the year left us. again bringing 4 artists together on one release shifting between dusty, mellow house and some how twisted techno. peonies from russia, who has been releasing tapes on his own label �summer night� since 1 year, sets the mood for the record with his track �soft light� which sounds almost like a dim, fading memory of a club night full of classy house records. the rework by ital, the head behind �lovers rock� from new york, builds up the mood in a complete different, driving and technoid atmosphere. the b-side is the first cooperation between two very old friends, berni from trier and jonas palzer from berlin, both part of portray records. their tracks are playing with the same kind of hauntology as the a�side, building up a sound that is familiar and distant in the same way - referring to old records by boards of canada as well as to the contemporary sound of �house� at its best meaning.

when hitting a streak it s best to keep going. for a prolific producer like ubx127 one ep just wasn t enough to keep up with his continuous output of high quality techno. constant permutation part 2 picks up where its predecessor left off and provides for another batch of deadly club weapons. living up to its title, beatless explorations sends out eerie signals deep into outer space, anticipating with suspense to maybe find some life form s response. it arrives in form of driving track felt and its ricocheting, arpeggiated synths, which would aptly soundtrack the decent of alien attack ships on our planet. weighty, yet mysterious Örnsberg seems to echo with the cries of long lost souls that have been trapped eternally inside its icy caverns. the ep ends with a masterclass in immersive sound design, a constant ebb and flow of layers, winding their way into the listeners subconscious. filling up a pair of twelves to the brim with tunes this well thought out and executed, ubx127 further displays his vast potential and leaves us with excitement for whatever he might be coming up with next.

chicago basement trax returns with an homage to the king of the raw himself ron hardy. those that experienced ron hardy first hand will tell you there was a vibe like no other. a minimal space with strobe lights and a bangin system. if you put your hands on an eq or isolator as a dj thank ron as being an innovator of this creative style of frequency manipulation. not only did ron drop the bass, he dropped whole songs to expose the beautiful crispy hi hats, vocals and then romanced you with the piano before slapping your whole body with the beat. this ep does its job to take you there, just close your eyes and blast off!

desolat label boss loco dice is back with what is sure to be a massive autumn package: he has remixed the seminal dance track �go� by the legendary moby, twice, and has made it all his own in the process. moby needs little introduction: the american dance producer and live performer�s albums are classics of the genre that are celebrated far and wide. they have been used on thousands of adverts, have given rise to hit singles all over the world and have made him one of the most celebrated electronic music stars of our time. his �go� track was what started it all for him back in the 90�s, and was a bona fide club classic of the day. it still resonates today and always gets crowds going. now it has been remixed twice by loco dice, who has added his own stamp to it in distinctive fashion. his first excellent version is eight minutes of chunky and tribal drums, with rubber kicks, clipped horn stabs and big hits all building the pressure. those most famous vocal cries really finish it off in style, and ensure that dance floors will go wild whenever it is dropped, as do wonky synths and big piano chords at the breakdown. the second version is more emotive, with big sweeping strings smeared in the background to help make it all the more dramatic, teary eyed and impactful on the floor. this one is for the peak time in any set and is sure to make the most memorable moment of any night. both remixes here pack a real punch, and whilst remaining true to the original, they both sound just like you would expect from modern dance heavyweight loco dice.
